Michael Wandelmaier Illustration

It’s difficult to sit in someone’s seat who is so talented. But that’s what I do. Every day. I log into my work computer and there it is, the name reminding me of the talent that came before me: Michael Wandelmaier. His name is still one of the logins on my computer from a time at Mindblossom long before me. I guess because I’ve never met the guy, he remains a mystic in my mind. But have a look at his illustration – you might feel that way too.

As opposed as I am to Harpooning the Whooly Whale, isn’t the scene gorgeous? Beautiful colors, composition, detail. I love the rower in the foreground  - his double makes it seem as if the scene is in motion before you. But my favorite is the colors. The bright orange on degraded teal is lovely.

Ruffled Feathers, a self-promotional piece by Wandelmaier, is just as captivating. Inspiring concept – my interpretation: the bird of creativity trying to escape the bindings of a business man. With perhaps a subtle social reference – but is the reference to Invisible Man, the movie, or Invisible Man, the book?. What’s your interpretation?

To see some more outstanding illustrations by Michael, check out his website: www.wandelmaier.com or go straight to the shop (prints starting at $21.22, and you can order them framed, as well).

Absolutely amazing work and I read that he trained as a civil engineer and geologist before branching out into illustration. Truly a renaissance man, quite a pair of shoes to fill but I know that you’re the right girl for the job.
